A Clockwork Orange delivers on so many fronts. A classic dystopian, it explores themes of human nature, how violence is perceived/normalized in society, & authoritarianism, in very creative & unique ways. The plot is simple enough on its own, but you are kept hooked with the unique & immersive worldbuilding the author does.
The book starts out very in media res, with the main character already committing atrocities, & already speaking in the universes unique slang expecting you to understand. Almost as if there's no time to explain. Figuring out what these words mean throughout your read is rewarding in its own right, & by the end of the book you feel as you're a part of the world.
The author does a great job of writing the characters, especially Alex. You do not grow tired of spending every moment with this character, constantly anticipating what his next move or thought may be. His actions & the details gone into what transpires in A Clockwork Orange illicit a justifiably disgusted feeling from me very well. The book doesn't shy away from its themes of extreme violence, but also explores these themes well & every event in the book pushes forward the plot in one way or another. The events that unfold make for a thought provoking, timeless read.
