I really enjoyed Artemis, & was expecting to considering Wier's other works. A bit of a slow exposition until things start to ramp up plot-progression-wise, but boy did they ramp up. The stakes seemed to be getting higher & higher each page, as Jazz (our MC) continually got more & more in over her head. Really solid suspense thriller & heist novel that uses its setting of taking place on the moon really creatively. The author went the extra mile with the worldbuilding here, giving Artemis its own currency, & diving into its history & politics, even if the story revolves around Jazz.
Themes of friendship, family & forgiveness were strongly present throughout the story. Jazz's relationships are complicated, specifically with her conservative, religious father & former best friend. These relationships are tested as Jazz delves deeper into her life of crime. The heartfelt moments between characters feels earned, & the emotional beats hit pretty well. I definitely felt the emotions through the page when they were there.
What I wasn't a huge fan of at times was the humor that the book had here & there. "Who shit in your rice crispies?" is a real quote out of the book, & made me facepalm. But this is a personal gripe, & didn't have any lasting affect on my enjoyment of Artemis.
