Over Your Dead Body will make you laugh more than anything. And I think that's important to know going into it, there's no masterpiece of a narrative under the surface here, & it doesn't explore its themes in any thought provoking ways. But it also doesn't waste your time & pretend that it'll do any of those things either, so you can't be too mad. That being said, it's hard to review a movie like this, at least as a complete novice reviewer. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously, why should my review? Its elevator pitch is interesting enough & most of its entertainment comes from the over-the-top comedy & violence throughout it. Writing a somewhat in depth review for a movie of this tone is tricky. Despite these obstacles, I'll try my best.
What this movie does very well is its storytelling. Their use of transitional title cards to piece together the events & sub-plots kept me hooked, & kept the flow of the movie going & coherent. The action/fight scenes were choreographed well enough & the movie was overall shot pretty well. Settings/things of interest visually popped & made scenes very memorable.
What I didn't really like were the two main characters arcs through the movie. They both want to kill each other after years of a strenuous relationship & then, through almost no work of their own, they don't want to anymore by the end of the movie. Yes, each character has a metaphorical mirror held up to themselves to see how they wronged each other & put things in perspective, but it feels undeserved. Like, in a weird way, they were lucky to be home invaded by runaway convicts trying to kill them, or else (spoiler for the ending alert) one of them would be dead & their marriage wouldn't have been saved.
