Another great revenge story. True Grit stands out in multiple ways, most notably (in my opinion) in its main character & narrator, Mattie. She guides us through the story with a deadpan-humor style of narrating which adds a comedic tone to an otherwise serious & mature plot.
As the story starts out, Matties wants to see her dads killer legally sent to justice & hung for his crimes. However, as the book goes on, it's clear that she holds her personal grudge of seeing Tom Chaney killed to a higher priority than the actual law. This theme of personal revenge vs legal justice is seen throughout the book, especially with characters like Rooster, a marshal helping Mattie who is clearly not afraid to go to extreme measures in delivering justice.
A lot of settings & characters are explored, making this a very fun read as our characters make their journey. Every place seemed relevant in its own way & it made the world large & immersive. Mattie's character goes through a lot, & although she accomplishes her goal, she pays the price of losing an arm after having narrowly survived such a dangerous quest. Which sort of continued the mirroring of her character & Rooster, as he has a missing eye.
